Abstract
Mucoid impaction of the bronchi results from a localized accumulation of inspissated mucus in the bronchi, and may be defined as the obstruction of proximal bronchi by plugs of inspissated mucus and exudate. The impaction grows in size in a
laminated
manner to finally dilate the bronchus in which it lies to many times its normal diameter.
The most striking feature of the pathology is the gross finding of paired impactions of mucoid material in major branch bronchi, and lipoid granulomatous inflammation of the destroyed wall of the involved bronchus and the pulmonary tissue beyond
the
plugs. Typically, this impaction occurs in the second order bronchi distal to a bifurcation, and rarely observed in the main stem or first order of bronchi, We experianced a case of total lung collpase, due to mucoid impaction in the left main
stem
bronchus. The patient was 44-years old male with diabetes mellitus. Thick mucus plug in the left main stem bronchus was removed successfully by bronchoscopic biopsy forceps.
